- Monitor the disk space usage in WHM. To do this login to WHM (https://vpsname.yourdomainname.com.au/whm) then under the "Server Health" section there is a link to "Show Current Disk Usage". Make sure that none of the partitions mentioned have over 95%. The VPS will function normally up until the point you hit 100% so we suggest that once it gets to 95% let us know so we can go through and work out with you the best course of action.
- Ensure that your WHM/CPanel installation is up to date. You can upgrade to the latest version of cpanel by logging in to WHM, going to the "CPanel" section and clicking on "Upgrade to the latest version". This will ensure that you have the latest security patches and bug fixes applied for CPanel/WHM itself.
- Make sure your webservers kernal, webserver (apache, NGINX,Litespeed), mail, mysql, firewall, antivirus and malware scanning software is updated regularly
- Make sure that your log files are rotating regularly and any large or obsolete versions are removed to ensure plenty of disk space is available. The important log file locations are available at https://documentation.cpanel.net/display/CKB/The+cPanel+Log+Files
- Make sure that your root password is updated regularly, is complex in terms of length and not one you have utilized in the past. We suggest that you update the password every 30-60 days. This is handled by going to "Change Root Password" in the "Server Configuration" section of WHM
- Test backups randomly and regularly to ensure data integrity.
- Monitor user accounts / domains on the server. Make sure that they are not exceeding their allocated disk space usage or getting close to it. If you notice that they appear to be getting close to their limits ensure that you notify them and see what they want to do in relation to increasing the disk space or removing unwanted data from the account. If your VPS fills up its allocated disk space users will stop receiving email and in some cases their sites will go offline.
